HILLSBORO, Kan. – Tabor College has produced some fantastic athletes, with number of former Bluejays continuing on in their sport at the next level, but the school has produced a number of coaches, teachers, and leaders at a greater rate.
In today's Flashback Friday, we will take a look at a former Bluejay who is currently making a huge impact as a coach, teacher, and most importantly as a leader of young men and women.
Lewis Wiebe might be a familiar name for many in the Tabor College and surrounding communities as a Tabor graduate who also had children who attended Tabor. Wiebe is currently one of the most successful currently active high school basketball coaches in the state of Kansas as the Head Boys Basketball Coach at Berean Academy, a Christian school in Elbing, between Whitewater and Newton with historic ties to the Mennonite Brethren Church.
Wiebe's Warriors squad is rolling, boasting a 15-6 overall record and a 7-4 record in Heart of America League (HOA) play.
Before we go too far into Wiebe's time at Berean, let's go back to where it all started, which ironically begins with Wiebe attending high school at Berean, graduating in the class of 1978. Following his time as a student at Berean, Wiebe made the trek to Omaha, Neb. to attend Grace University. After a short time at Grace, he transferred to Tabor to complete his college education, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Health and Physical Education.
While a student at Tabor, Wiebe competed as a member of the TC Men's Basketball team, recording 205 total points during his Senior season in 1981-82, a mark that ranks fourth on that squad. He averaged 9.76 points per game, good for third on the team, shooting 52% from the field (78-151). Wiebe also led the Bluejays in assists, recording an impressive 113 assists on the season.
For his efforts during that 1981-82 season, Wiebe was named as team MVP (Most Valuable Player) and earned All-KCAC Honorable Mention honors and posted single-game marks of Most Free Throws Made (eight) and Most Assists (11).
Following his college career, Wiebe served as a coach at Central Christian High School in Hutchinson, Kan. and Oklahoma Bible Academy in Enid, Okla. before returning to Berean as a basketball and track and field coach and faculty member in 1992. In 2005, he was selected as the KSHSAA Class 2A Track and Field Coach of the Year.
Most recently, Wiebe earned his 700
th career win as a boys' basketball head coach on January 21
st against rival Classical School of Wichita.
Wiebe and his Warriors are in action tonight at 7:30pm in the Moundridge High School Substate No. 1 Championship Game as they take on the host and No. 1 seed Moundridge after downing Hillsboro High School in the Semifinals this past Tuesday, 44-43.
