HILLSBORO, Kan. – The Bluejay Reserve Baseball team looked to take advantage of a beautiful day and build on their doubleheader sweep at Bethany College last week. The series sweep over the Swedes would provide some momentum for the Bluejays after dropping four of their first six games. The Bluejays would welcome the Ottawa University Reserve team to Hillsboro for an afternoon doubleheader. The Reserve Braves were coming off a disappointing doubleheader at Iowa Western Community College yesterday in which they gave up 54 runs and were shut out in both games.
Game One
It took extra innings for the Bluejays to roll past the Braves in the first game, but the game was never short of excitement. Tyler Epp homered to give the Bluejays some juice and D.J. Spring put the cherry on top with a 2-RBI single to give to propel Tabor to a win in extras. The Bluejays would go on to win, 8-7.
Head Reserve Coach Drake Girard had this to say about the first game of the day, "I think all of our pitchers threw really well today. Wyatt Samuels gave us a strong two innings out of the pen that really kept us in the game. Our hitting is progressing in the right direction as well: Ethan Eddy hard a very good day getting three hits in the game, Tyler Epp came up big with a homerun and D.J. Spring with a huge 2-RBI single to give us the lead in extras. Coming off the bench is already hard enough and D.J. came in and did his job picking up two huge RBIs."
Game Two
While the Braves would hang around in the first game, it looked like they had run out of gas in Game Two. The Bluejays' pitching was a major part of the win, giving up only two runs, while the team looked solid once again on offense, highlighted by a three-run homer from Trenton Beck. The Bluejays would cruise to a 7-2 result.
"Marshall Gilstrap gave us another great outing", said Coach Girard. "Our staff threw very well as a whole. Trenton Beck came up in a huge spot and hit a 3-run home run over center. It looks like everyone is getting more and more comfortable with each-other and you can see that on and off the field."
The Bluejays will be back in action next Monday, March 18, as they host the York University Reserve squad for a doubleheader. The first pitch of that series will take place at 1pm.
