HILLSBORO, Kan. – The Tabor College Reserve Women's Basketball team took on the Bulldogs of Concordia University Nebraska on Friday. The game was added after the tragedy at Kansas Wesleyan University last week as KWU canceled all campus events for the weekend.
The first quarter was tight and showed a glimpse of what the game might turn into. The Bluejays would hold a four-point lead at the end of the first quarter, 19-16.
Kaylee Kauffman (6) led the team in scoring during the first quarter, while
Sally Wine would have four,
Makenna Reed hit a three in the middle of the quarter, and
Katelin Long,
Jaelle Johnson, and
Jenna Uehling would each have two.
The Lady Bluejays would extend their lead in the second quarter and go into the halftime break up nine, 41-32. Kauffman led the team in scoring in the first half with 17,
Malynn Beil had eight, Uehling had five, Wine would have four, Reed had three, and Johnson and Long each had two.
Tabor came out of the halftime break on a tear and scored 24 points in the third quarter and pushed their lead out to 18. Kauffman led the way in scoring after three quarters with 28, Beil had 10,
Tayton Smith had six, Uehling had five, Wine had four, Reed and
Grace Wright had three, and Johnson, Long, and
Kyra Shewey each had two.
The fourth quarter saw the Bluejays close out the game, holding the Bulldogs to six points, all free throws, and scoring 16 themselves.
Kaylee Kauffman would explode for a career high 31 points, while Beil and Smith would each go for 12 to round out the Bluejays in double figures. Seven other Bluejays would score: Long and Uehling (5), Johnson and Wine (4), Reed and Wright (3), and Shewey (2).
Head Coach Kate Brickell had this to say about the win, "We came into the game knowing it would be a 40-minute battle as Concordia has a very successful basketball program. The first half we had good sequences, but their full court pressure kept us from extending the lead out. The second half we did a much better job taking care of the ball and controlling the tempo. I'm extremely proud of how hard all of our ladies competed tonight. Kaylee put on a heck of a performance shooting the ball and it was a lot of fun watching her teammates continuously find her."
