HILLSBORO, Kan. – Going undefeated in conference play is a feat that is hard to achieve for any team, let alone repeating that feat for a second year in a row, but that is exactly what Coach Kate Brickell and the Tabor Reserve Women's Basketball team accomplished with their win at Bethel College on Wednesday afternoon.
A season ago, the Lady Bluejays went a perfect 14-0 in KCAC play, which was followed up this season with a perfect 12-0 record in KCAC play.
To many people a college Reserve, JV, or Developmental program in any sport is a way to draw in more revenue for a program or give athletes a chance at playing college sports when they might not otherwise have the opportunity to do so. The purpose is different for the Tabor College Women's Basketball program. Year after year, student-athletes have been developed and mentored with the opportunity to earn a key spot on the Varsity squad. Athletes like Brooke Berlin,
Kaylee Kauffman,
Katelin Long,
Tayton Smith, and
Jaelle Johnson earned their spots on the Varsity squad for this season after their performances and development under Coach Brickell last season.
This season is no different. Next year, more of these student-athletes will have the chance to earn their spot on varsity. In the meantime, winning a conference title is special on any level, but winning two in a row and finishing back-to-back seasons undefeated in conference play? Now that's elite.
Varsity Head Coach Shawn Reed expressed his thoughts on the season, "I'm really proud of our Reserve team for finishing the season undefeated in KCAC play! Our Reserve program has been a foundational part of our success as a program, and it was great to see this team compete and improve throughout the year!"
"Coach Brickell continues to do a marvelous job with our Reserve team, and we are blessed to have her lead their efforts! Next season, the opportunity for members of this Reserve squad to move up and make an impact at the varsity level will be available. We are graduating a large class, and our Reserve players understand our system and principles which gives them a great chance!"
