HILLSBORO, Kan. – The Tabor College Reserve Women's Basketball team took on the Bethel College Women's Reserve Basketball team yesterday afternoon. The Lady Bluejays were looking to secure the season sweep over the Threshers after getting a decisive win in December, 64-28. The Bluejays were coming off a thrilling comeback win over the Bethany College Reserve team on Monday and looked to build on their eight-game winning streak.
Tabor came racing out of the gate in the first quarter and asserted their will on the Threshers from the tip. The Bluejays held a 19-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, 26-7.
Kaylee Kauffman (8) led the team in scoring in the first quarter, while
Jaelle Johnson was right behind her with six points.
Malynn Beil and
Kyra Shewey each had four points, while
Makenna Reed and
Tayton Smith finished with two points apiece.
The Bluejays let up just slightly, compared to the first quarter, but still outscored the Threshers 11-11 in the second quarter. Despite scoring less in the second quarter, the Bluejays would enjoy a comfortable 25-point lead going into the halftime break, 43-18, a far cry from the halftime break during the Bethany game on Monday. Kauffman would continue to lead the Bluejays in scoring with 11, while Beil had eight, Johnson had six, Shewey and Smith each had four, and Reed,
Amiya Mack,
Mallorie Pearson,
Sally Wine, and
Grace Wright each had two points.
The Bluejays would continue to keep their foot on the gas and would outscore Bethel in the third quarter, 18-11, and would maintain a 32-point lead going into the fourth quarter. Smith (13) and Johnson (11) would break into double-figures and would join Kauffman (11), while Beil (9) would sit just outside of that range. Shewey and Wine would have four, and Mack, Pearson, and Reed would each have two.
The Tabor women would outscore the Threshers 20-13 in the fourth quarter and would roll to a 39-point win and sweep the season series between the two teams, 81-42.
Tayton Smith (18) and
Jaelle Johnson (14) would each record career highs, while Beil and Kauffman would each contribute 11 points to round out the Bluejays scoring in double figures and
Kyra Shewey (8) would also record a career high, finishing just outside of the double-figure range. Wine would finish with six points, Pearson and Mack would each have four, and Reed would finish with three.
"I was pleased to see a much improved start to the game from Monday night", said Reserve Head Coach Kate Brickell. "Kaylee started us on an 8-0 run and that carried us throughout the game. We outscored them in each quarter and were solid defensively. Tayton gave us very efficient minutes rebounding and finishing around the rim and at the free throw line. To have a strong performance today was important and I thought we did a great job taking care of business."
The Lady Bluejays will return to action on Saturday to face the Friends University Reserve team at 12:45pm.
