SALINA, Kan. – The Tabor College Women's Reserve Basketball team traveled up north to Salina to face the Kansas Wesleyan Reserve Women's Basketball team. The Lady Bluejays came into the game off a 53 point drubbing of Southwestern College last Wednesday, while the Coyotes were coming off a four point loss at Friends University on Saturday.
The Lady Bluejays found themselves up by one at the end of the first quarter, 12-11. At the end of the first quarter, the individual scoring for Tabor was equally distributed as five players each had two points:
Katelin Long,
Jaelle Johnson,
Mallorie Pearson,
Tayton Smith, and
Sally Wine, while
Malynn Beil and
Jenna Uehling each made a free throw.
The second quarter proved to be the point where the Bluejays would start to separate themselves from the Coyotes and take full control. Tabor would outscore Kansas Wesleyan 14-5 in the second quarter and would carry an 11 point lead into the halftime break, 27-16. At the halftime break, Long and Uehling lead the way for the Bluejays at six points apiece, while Beil, Smith, and
Kaylee Kauffman each had three, and Johnson, Pearson, and Wine each had two.
The third quarter would end up being more even on the scoring end, with Tabor only outscoring Kansas Wesleyan 16-13, but the Bluejays would still hold a 13 point lead going into the final quarter of play. After three quarters played, Uehling would lead the Lady Bluejays in scoring with 14 points, while Long would have eight, Smith had seven, Kaufman had five, Beil had three, and Johnson, Pearson, and Wine each had two.
The Bluejays would outscore the Coyotes 17-6 in the final quarter, holding the Coyotes to zero field goals and instead making them earn their points from the free throw line. Uehling led the team in scoring overall with 18 points while Smith had 12. Beil would finish with nine points, Long was right behind her with eight, Kauffman had five, and Johnson, Pearson, Wine, and
Kyra Shewey each finished with two points apiece.
Reserve Head Coach Kate Brickell had this to say about her team's effort, "We started the game passive, settling for shots on the offensive end and playing incorrect coverages on the defensive end. The second quarter our defensive effort really stepped up only allowing 5 points, which created transition opportunities to gain momentum. In the second half we extended the score by shooting 22 free-throws and not allowing a field goal in the 4th quarter. Jenna had a great offensive performance tonight and provided defensive leadership that was really exciting to watch."
The Reserve Women will be back at home to face Sterling College next Wednesday, February 7
th. The game will tip off at 1:45 pm and will be streamed on the
Tabor College YouTube page.
