Box Score 4 MESQUITE, Texas – Tabor College Softball wrapped up their season-opening tournament on Sunday afternoon in Mesquite, Texas, at the Southern Collegiate Sports NAIA Invitational. The Lady Bluejays had the opportunity to take on some of the best teams in the nation as they as they faced four different opponents throughout the weekend.
GAME ONE: SOUTHWESTERN CHRISTIAN, L 6-11
SCU took to the plate first, scoring two early runs in the first inning. In the bottom half,
Darcy Gillen tripled to send
Mikayla Guarascio home and
Cheyenne Washington singled shortly after to send Gillen across the plate.
The Bluejays struggled throughout the rest of the game on offense, managing only to score four more runs while Southwestern Christian added another nine to their total. Washington hit a bomb to left center in the seventh inning, securing her first home run of the season.
GAME TWO: MID-AMERICA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY, W 7-6
Friday's second game proved to be a thrilling one as Tabor faced a tough MACU team. Mid-America got on the board first, scoring six runs in the top of the first. Tabor managed to respond with three of their own, bridging the gap to three runs with a lot of game left to play.
Neither team scored during the next two innings, and the Bluejays were the next to put up some runs, scoring four in the bottom of the fourth. Tough defense on both sides resulted in zeroes across the board for the rest of the game. Tabor managed to secure a 7-6 win over the Evangels and
Madison Nelson took the win in her pitching debut for the Lady Bluejays.
GAME THREE: NO. 8 OKLAHOMA CITY UNIVERSITY, L 4-14
On Saturday, the Lady Bluejays faced the Stars of No. 8 Oklahoma City University. Tabor remained the home team as they had all weekend, scoring one run in the first inning. The Lady Bluejays managed to score a few more runs in the second, including a three-run homer by
Lauren Roberts.
Tabor struggled to continue putting up results throughout the rest of the game, while the Lady Stars scored a combined 12 runs in the last three innings. Although the offense faced challenges, several Tabor pitchers gained valuable in-game experience early in the season.
GAME FOUR: UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA, L 0-9
Sunday morning wrapped up the tournament for the Bluejays as they faced the University of British Columbia. The offensive struggle continued for Tabor as they failed to put up any runs. During the cold, rainy matchup, UBC put up a combined nine runs.
Marisa Carranza started her second game of the weekend, with
Abigelle Buchanan later entering as a relief pitcher.
Unfortunately, due to weather conditions, both teams had to cancel the second half of the doubleheader, prompting Tabor to return home earlier than anticipated.
TOURNAMENT RECAP
While the weekend presented its challenges, Tabor showcased resilience and determination, highlighted by a hard-fought win over MACU and key individual performances. The Lady Bluejays were able to get some extremely valuable playing time against a handful of tough opponents throughout the tournament.
Tabor will return down to the Lone Star State next weekend as they face Jarvis Christian University in two double headers and finish up the weekend by facing Texas Wesleyan University in a Sunday double header.
