2026 TABOR COLLEGE HALL OF FAME INDUCTION SPOTLIGHT: HEATH MARRS

HILLSBORO, Kan. – Tabor College Athletics proudly recognizes former football standout Heath Marrs, one of the most accomplished offensive players in program history and a dominant force for Bluejay Football during the early 1990s.

Marrs transferred to Tabor College in the fall of 1991, arriving in Hillsboro from his hometown of El Centro, Calif. It did not take long for him to make an immediate impact on the Bluejay program, quickly earning the starting tight end role and becoming a major contributor to the offense during his sophomore campaign.

His first season in blue and gold concluded with letter-winner recognition, but it was only the beginning of what would become a remarkable collegiate career.

During his junior season, Marrs emerged as one of the premier playmakers in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. He led the Bluejays in receiving yards and touchdown receptions while establishing himself as one of the top tight ends in the NAIA ranks. For his standout play, Marrs earned First Team All-KCAC honors and was selected First Team NAIA All-District 10.

Marrs elevated his game once again as a senior, pacing the Bluejay offense for a second consecutive year by leading the team in receptions and touchdowns. His leadership and production helped guide Tabor to a .500 record, marking only the second such season in school history at that time.

Across his Bluejay career, Marrs totaled 74 receptions for 922 yards and 12 touchdowns, averaging an impressive 13.2 yards per catch. His combination of size, athleticism, and toughness made him one of the most difficult matchups in the conference.

Beyond the numbers, Marrs' legacy was defined by consistency, leadership, and excellence. He was named a two-year Team Captain, two-time Team MVP, two-time All-KCAC selection, and two-time NAIA All-District 10 honoree. He was also voted Tabor College Most Valuable Male Athlete in both 1993 and 1994.

Current Tabor Head Football Coach Mike Gardner, who coached against Marrs during his tenure at Bethel College, offered high praise when reflecting on Marrs' impact.

"What made Heath special is you had to always know where he was. He is the only tight end in my coaching career that demanded some form of bracket coverage during the entire game. He was a punishing blocker, had great ball skills, refused to be tackled by one defender, had really good speed for someone of his size, and simply made the difficult plays look easy. In addition, he was a class act and fierce competitor who was respected by the entire conference."

After his playing career concluded, Marrs continued to build a legacy centered around education, leadership, and mentorship. Following his graduation from Tabor, he earned a master's degree from Fort Hays State University before completing a doctorate in educational psychology at Kansas State University. He later became a certified school psychologist and dedicated his career to serving and preparing future educators.

Marrs currently serves as a Professor of Psychology at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash., where he joined the faculty in 2009 after previous faculty appointments at both Tabor College and Fort Hays State University. In his current role, he trains graduate students preparing to serve as school psychologists in K-12 schools, continuing his commitment to developing and supporting future generations.

Away from the classroom, Marrs and his wife, Cara, a 1996 Tabor graduate and former Bluejay women's basketball student-athlete, have built a family deeply connected to athletics. The couple has three children currently competing at the collegiate level: Gavin, who has played basketball at Oregon State and will continue his career at Saint Joseph's University; Alana, a volleyball student-athlete at Oregon State; and Garrett, who competes in basketball at Central Washington University. The Marrs family resides in Ellensburg and remains actively involved in their local church community while spending much of their time supporting their children's athletic pursuits.

Marrs remains one of the premier tight ends to ever wear the Bluejay uniform, and his career stands as a shining example of leadership, toughness, and elite performance in Tabor Football history.
