HILLSBORO, Kan. – Bluejay Baseball made the quick turnaround on Tuesday afternoon as they welcomed the University of Saint Mary to the plains for the second game of the mid-week series between the two programs. The wind made for an interesting affair, longtime fans will understand, Bluejay Baseball Field turn into an airstrip on those days, making for plenty of homeruns.
Game Two: W, 25-12
Marcelo Aguirre got the fireworks started for Tabor in the bottom of the 1
st inning, smashing a solo homer over the fence and getting things going for the Bluejays early. After
Juan Rosa Gonzalez found himself on base,
Micah Dvorak sent a no-doubter over the left field fence, also sending Rosa Gonzalez in to score.
Jared Mack followed with a huge solo bomb of his own to make the lead 4-0 in favor of Tabor.
Isaiah Cohens helped extend the Bluejay lead with an RBI single to left field, followed by a massive three-run homer by
Garryn Plummer in Plummer's second at-bat of the 1
st inning.
Saint Mary followed Tabor's massive inning with a huge inning of the own, scoring seven runs in the top of the 2
ndinning, highlighted by a grand slam by Daniel Martinez, cutting the Bluejays' lead to one, 8-7.
The Bluejays sent four additional runs across the plate in the bottom of the 2
nd as Mack recorded an RBI single, sending
Cody Moore home.
Aidan Martinez followed things up with a sacrifice fly to the Spires' leftfielder, sending Rosa Gonzalez to cross the plate. Cohens pushed Tabor's lead to five runs with a two-RBI single to right field, scoring both Dvorak and Mack. Martinez continued his solid afternoon in the bottom of the 3
rd with a two-RBI double to right field, sending Dvorak and Mack home. Plummer followed with a two-RBI single to the Spires' shortstop, sending both
Cole Schieffer and Martinez to cross the plate.
A big two-run homer by Caleb McClellan highlighted the top of the 4
th for Saint Mary, as the Spires added three more runs in the inning. After the top of the inning, TC continued to lead, 16-10.
The bottom of the 4
th saw Tabor score four more runs, an appropriate total for the inning. Rosa Gonzalez smashed a solo homer past the center field fence to open the Bluejays' half of the inning. Mack made his way home as
Aidan Martinez found his way to first after an error by the USM pitcher. Martinez subsequently scored on a wild pitch, bringing the score to 19-10. Aguirre added another RBI to his stat line, putting the Bluejays up by 10 through four full innings, 20-10.
Mack tallied an RBI single to the shortstop to open the scoring in the bottom of the 5
th, advancing Dvorak to third and sending Rosa Gonzalez in to score. Schieffer followed with a big two-RBI single to center field, extending the TC lead to 13 as Dvorak and Mack made their way across the plate.
In what might be described as the most exciting moment on offense for Tabor since Rosa Gonzalez's solo homer in the bottom of the 4
th,
Mateo Martinez smashed a two-run no-doubter in his first at-bat of the afternoon, resulting in a raucous TC dugout greeting him as he arrived home.
Jack Knutson added the final two runs for the Spires in the top of the 7
th with a two-run homer. Despite the last-gasp effort from Saint Mary, the Bluejays rolled to a huge game two victory in run-rule fashion, 25-12.
It took a committee of Bluejay pitchers to help get the job done, but it was Quinton Holman who was credited with the win on the hill, bringing his overall record on the season to 2-0.
Garryn Plummer led the Bluejays offensively with five RBIs and one homer, while
Marcelo Aguirre,
Juan Rosa Gonzalez,
Mateo Martinez,
Micah Dvorak, and
Jared Mack also recorded one homer each on the afternoon.
With the win, the Bluejays pull ahead in the series with the Spires, 2-0 and improve to 23-14 overall on the season and 15-10 in KCAC play.
The Bluejays return to the ballpark on Saturday as they play host to Kansas Wesleyan University. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is scheduled for 12:00pm.
