GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Bluejays started the KCAC Conference Tournament against the Avila University Eagles. Weather played a factor in the 2024 baseball tournament, starting a day later, May 2, and pushing back a couple of hours. With a 2:15 p.m. start, the Jays pulled out a first-round win, 6-3.
The first inning started with a Tyler Mata Lloyd single up the middle. Garryn Plummer reached on a hard ground ball hit to the shortstop. Pinch runner Isaiah Cohens stole second, advanced to third on an error by the catcher and Mata Lloyd scored. Juan Rosa-Gonzalez hit an RBI to score Cohens, 2-0.
The Bluejays scored another two in the 2nd inning. Micah Dvorak led the inning off with a walk, Trotter Boston reached on an error by the shortstop. The pitcher threw a wild pitch to move Dvorak and Boston into scoring position. Mata Lloyd singled to right to score both runners, 4-0.
Avila added two runs to their score in the top of the 5th inning, 4-2. Going into the 7th, the Eagles were in arms reach of the Jays, scoring another run, 4-3. But the Bluejays returned with one when Boston scored off a hit by Plummer, 5-3.
Tabor secured the lead with a hit by Brady Cardozo, he moved over to second on a wild pitch and was hit to third by Miguel Ramos III. Jackie Jimenez hit to the second baseman to score Cardozo, 6-3.
The Bluejays stay in Great Bend, Kansas to take on Oklahoma Wesleyan University in the semi-finals at 12:15 p.m. on May 3, 2024.
