LINDSBORG, Kan. – Fresh off a three-game winning streak, the Bluejay Softball team traveled half an hour north up to Lindsborg looking to continue that streak against the Swedes of Bethany College. The Bluejays were coming off a doubleheader sweep on Saturday over Southwestern College, while the Swedes were coming off a trip to Springfield, Mo. where they were swept by Evangel in a doubleheader there.
Game One – W 2-1
The 1
st Inning would be a breeze, with both sides going three-up-three-down. The Swedes got on the board first in the 2
nd, and it would take the Bluejays until the 6
th Inning to answer.
Cheyenne Washington would hit an RBI single in the 6
th to drive in
Laura Savage. Both squads would be locked in a stalemate but the time the 7
th Inning came and went, and extra innings were required. Finally, in the top of the 9
th,
Reese Hefley would hit a sac fly out to center field and would drive in
Payten Staley to score the winning run. The Bluejays would win game one, 2-1.
Marisa Carranza would earn the win in the circle to improve to 4-5 on the season.
"Tough day with mother nature; the wind was brutal today", remarked Head Softball Coach Jeff Brewer.
"Our pitching was good, and
Marisa Carranza competed in the circle. Overall, we played good defense and made some great plays to keep us in the game. Offensively,
Reese Hefley had a good day, and
Cheyenne Washington,
Laura Savage,
Mikayla Guarascio and
Darcy Gillen all had some quality at bats."
Game Two
The Bluejay bats struggled in the second game, getting runners on base, but not being able to capitalize. Bethany would score the only run of the game off a sac fly in the bottom of the 3
rd.
Annabelle Buchanan would record the loss in the circle for Tabor to drop to 3-6 overall. The Bluejays would lose the second game 1-0.
"We had runners on base multiple times and just couldn't get a hit when we needed it", reflected Coach Brewer.
Annabelle Buchanan competed in the circle and threw very well, while
Laura Savage,
Darcy Gillen,
Jordyn Farren,
Lainee Rae Miller and
Cheyenne Washington all had good at bats in the second game."
After splitting the doubleheader, the Bluejay ladies move to 8-12 overall and 4-2 in KCAC play.
