WINFIELD, Kan. – The Bluejay Softball team made the short trip down to Winfield to face the Southwestern College Moundbuilders in their second series in conference play. The Lady Bluejays were coming off a thrilling conference-opening doubleheader at home against McPherson College. The Bluejays split with McPherson and had to battle through every at-bat to earn it, while the Moundbuilders were coming off a disappointing series with Evangel University, where they were swept and gave up 21 runs across both games.
Game One
The Bluejays started off the first game strong, earning two hits which saw
Mikayla Guarascio and
Laura Savage both get on base, but the strong start would be erased by three quick popouts. The game would remain scoreless until the top of the 6
th Inning, where the Bluejays would end the stalemate starting with an RBI double from
Reese Hefley to send
Jacie Myers in to score. Jaqueline Garcia would then hit an RBI single to send Hefley in and
Payten Staley would hit an RBI single to send Garcia in for run number three.
Marisa Carranza would pitch another quick inning in the bottom of the 6
th and Tabor would score again in the top of the 7
th, off a fielding error by the Southwestern shortstop. The Bluejays would win 4-0 and Carranza would be credited with the win in the circle to move to 3-5 on the season so far.
Game Two
The second game looked like it would start in a similar fashion to the first, but this time it would be the 3
rd Inning where the Bluejays drew blood first.
Reyna Enriquez and
Dessa Zavala would score first due to a fielding error by the second baseman, and
Cheyenne Washington and
Darcy Gillen would score off a two RBI single from
Savannah Evans. Enriquez would score in the 4
th Inning off an RBI from
Lauren Roberts, and Roberts would score from an RBI double by Gillen to push Tabor's lead to six after four innings played. Neither team would be score in the last three innings and the Bluejays would go on to win, 6-0 and
Annabelle Buchanan would pick up the win in the circle to move her record on the season to 3-5.
With the two wins, the Bluejays would improve to 7-11 overall and 3-1 in KCAC play, while the Moundbuilders would drop to 2-16 overall and 0-4 in KCAC play.
The Bluejay ladies will be back on the road this coming Wednesday, March 20
th and will travel just north to Lindsborg to take on the Bethany College Swedes. The first pitch of the doubleheader will be thrown at 1pm and the games will be broadcast live on the
KCAC Network.
