KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Bluejay Football hit the road again this past weekend as the Bluejays made the trip east to Kansas City to take on Avila University. Coming off a win in exciting fashion in their division-opener last weekend, the Bluejays looked to capitalize on two straight wins.
The Bluejays entered the game after winning a thrilling battle with Sterling in the final seconds a week ago, while the Eagles came in fresh off a loss at Kansas Wesleyan.
Sean Hunter put Tabor on the board first with a 57-yard run just a minute into the first quarter. Avila answered by way of a touchdown and a field goal, before
Willie Green put the Bluejays back on top with a run of his own. The Eagles took a 17-14 lead with two seconds left in the first half courtesy of a 32-yard touchdown pass from Eli Williams.
Big plays were the story yet again in the second half as
Brandon King jumped in to block an Avila field goal attempt, taking it to the house on a 70-yard run, giving the Bluejays a 21-17 lead. The Eagles clawed back to within one, before Green found the endzone again for his second rushing touchdown of the afternoon. Avila got their chance to make a big play by way of converting a blocked punt for a touchdown of their own to tie things up at 28.
Regulation proved to not be enough, as the previous Avila touchdown forced the game to head into overtime. Tabor took possession first, making the most of their opportunity to start with the ball and sending Green back into the endzone to go up 35-28. The Eagles looked to tie things up, but
Brooks Gardner snagged an errant throw by Williams and took it to the house to wrap things up and give Tabor the 41-28 win.
With the win, the Bluejays improve to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in Bissell Division play.
Tabor hits the road again this weekend as the Bluejays head to Salina for a meeting with Kansas Wesleyan.
