WICHITA, Kan. The Tabor men's indoor track traveled to Wichita State on January 26-27 to participate in the Herm Wilson Invite. There were also a number of great results on the track at the Wendy's/Pittsburg State Invitational.
Coming off a record-breaking performance last week, junior Vance Shewey (6-06.75) continued his momentum, taking fourth in the high jump at Wichita State.
In the shot put, junior Joshua Garcia (39-08.75) took 18th, sophomore Chase Nash (36-01.05) took 22nd and freshman Caleb Wehrman (32-11.00) took 27th. Nash (40-00.75) also took 22nd in the weight throw.
Tabor had some strong performances in the running events, as junior Brandon Geyer (1:27.98) finished in sixth place in the 600m. In the 60m hurdles, Wehrman (9.43) finished in 31st place and freshman Trevor Brokar (10.45) finished in 37th place.
At Pittsburg State, Tabor collected a couple of "A" standard performances. Sophomore Ryan Stade (8:26.08) took third place in the 3000m and junior Dillon Callaway (1:54.20) took eighth place in the 800m.
"Dillon Callaway and Ryan Stade both are deserving of POW honors with their performances at Pitt State. Dillon has the best 800 in the conference this year. Both guys were "A" standard national qualifiers," Head Coach David Kroeker said.
In the 5000m, junior Matt Veloz (15:50.46) finished 21st, junior Logan Dybowski (16:01.75) finished 28th and senior Ryan Villarreal (16:58.33) finished 36th. Senior Jerah Schmidt (9:34.87) also took 41st place in the 3000m.
"At Pittsburg State our distance crew delivered several personal bests. Matt Veloz started us with a huge day in the 5k and things kept rolling from there. We ended the day with two school records in back to back events from Dillon Callaway and Ryan Stade. Callaway hit the "A" standard in the 800 and Stade took 10 seconds off the previous 3k school record while also knocking out the "A" standard for 3000 meters. Callaway and Stade's performances also moved them into the top slot of the KCAC in their respective events!" Distance Coach Rylan Hincher said.
In the running events at Wichita State, senior Ali Cannon (23.46) finished in 22nd place and freshman Teagen Gallagher (23.81) finished in 34th place in the 200m. Cannon (7.24) finished 50th and Wehrman (7.50) finished 99th in the 60m.
In the 400m, Gallagher (53.32) placed 20th and senior Nick Montoya (55.38) placed 32nd. Junior Nicholas Green (2:42.17) placed 15th in the 1000m, closely followed by freshman teammate Darren Klukas (2:42.22), who placed 16th. Junior Apostolo Zuniga (3:11.43) placed 43rd in the 1000m as well.
Tabor finished sixth in the 4x4 relay with a team of Gallagher, Cannon, Montoya, and Geyer (3:33.44). Shewey, Green, Zuniga and Klukas also formed a team to take 18th place (3:56.92).
"Really pumped with where we are at right now, especially with the adversity the weather has caused for our group the last few weeks," Hincher said.
