Hillsboro, Kan. The Lady Bluejays took on Ottawa University at home, on October 7th to try to keep up their winning streak. The ladies played the Sterling Warriors this past Wednesday and won in four sets. The team had high hopes of going head-to-head with a ranked (23) Ottawa University team but lost 3-1.
Head Coach Casey Quiggle had to say, "We prepared well for Ottawa and it showed on the court. While a loss is never the desired result, we all agreed that we still felt good after the game. There were some long rallies and neither team gave up throughout the match. Aside from the second set, it was back and forth pretty much the entire match. Our lady Bluejays showed tremendous heart, grit, and persistence. I'm extremely proud of them for giving it everything and staying upbeat today."
The ladies had good momentum going into the first set and were going back and forth with the Braves but just fell short, 23-25. In set two, the Bluejays came back from a deficit but couldn't shut Ottawa down, losing, 17-25. The third set looked good for the Bluejays after a quick timeout to reset, the ladies came on top and dominated, 26-24. The fourth set consisted of great team communication for both teams and fought to the end but ended up losing, 22-25.
Key players for this matchup included sophomore, Sammie Saunders with 12 kills. Junior, Valarie Allen with 10 kills. Senior, Emma Rhodes with 41 assists, and senior, Kenna Brandes with 18 digs.
"It was also nice to see some different people stepping up throughout the match. Juliana Alaniz did a great job playing right back defense for us today which is new for her this season. Sydney Biggs had a good first couple of sets and then Fiona Sampaio had a great second half in the final two sets. Our defense and blocking really came alive as well. Again, a loss isn't the result we wanted but everyone should feel proud of the effort and attitude they put out there today" said Coach Quiggle.
