WINFIELD, Kan. – Bluejay Football hit the road on Saturday as they traveled down to Winfield to take on No. 22 Southwestern. The Bluejays entered the contest after opening up their season against Sterling, 41-28.
The Moundbuilders started things off by taking a 3-0 lead, but the Bluejays followed up with a field goal from
Jonathon Scheffler after
Kelton Williams snagged an interception. Southwestern kept their foot on the gas, scoring the final 35 points of the contest.
Weston Rock led the team with six receptions for a total of 57 yards, with a longest reception of 26 yards.
Kaden Seibel led the way defensively, recording six solo tackles and eight total tackles, as well as 2.5 tackles-for-loss (TFLs) for a total of 24 yards, one sack for a total of 17 yards, and one fumble recovery.
Darriene Gibbs finished the day with five solo tackles and six total tackles, while recording 1.5 tackles-for-loss for a total of 11 yards, as well as one sack for a total of 10 yards.
"Our defense put up an absolutely heroic effort", remarked Head Coach
Mike Gardner. "They play about as well as you can, given the circumstances. Southwestern took away just about everything we wanted to do on offense."
The Bluejays return to action on Saturday as they return to the comforts of Joel H. Wiens Stadium as they host McPherson in the Highway 56 Showdown. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:00pm.
