HILLSBORO, Kan. – The small town of Hillsboro, Kan. seems like an odd place for a volleyball powerhouse to reside, but since the early 2000's, Tabor College Volleyball has been a force to contend with.
1971 marked an important time in the history of the Bluejay athletic program as volleyball became a new varsity sport. Amy Dahl was chosen to lead the inaugural squad, posting a 6-9 overall record in her lone season at the helm. Six years later, the 1977 team won the first Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) title in program history under Head Coach, Jana Clark. During Clark's two seasons as head coach, the Bluejays amassed an impressive 47-11 overall record as well as posting the first-ever 20-win seasons in program history.
The Bluejays struggled until Dr. Karol Hunt's final season in 1988, where they posted a 28-18 record and made a trip to the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) National Tournament. Three years later, Tina King led the program to their first-ever 30-win season, posting an overall record of 36-17.
In 1999, a young coach by the name of
Amy Ratzlaff was brought in to once again revive the struggling program, and it did not take her long to establish a KCAC dynasty. Ratzlaff still ranks as the winningest head coach in program history, with a 371-223 overall record and a 268-82 record in conference play.
The program's success under Ratzlaff has paved the way for another young coach,
Adam Brewster, as he is in his second season working to return Bluejay Volleyball to its rightful place.
