HILLSBORO, Kan. – Following a series sweep over the University of Saint Mary on Tuesday, the Lady Bluejays returned to their home field once again later in the week to host Evangel University on Saturday afternoon.
Going into the doubleheader with the Valor, Tabor held an overall record of 15-10 and a conference record of 6-4. Evangel entered with an overall record of 24-6 and a KCAC record of 8-2.
Last year's double header against Evangel resulted in a split series, with the Bluejays winning game one 5-2 and dropping game two 0-3. The two teams matched up twice during the KCAC Tournament last May, where Evangel eventually claimed the championship in a 12-inning contest against Friends.
GAME ONE: L, 0-1
The game began with both teams displaying strong pitching and fielding, as neither side managed to produce a hit in the first two innings. Evangel had a brief scoring opportunity in the second when Karlie Romines reached on an error and advanced to third, but Tabor's defense held firm to keep the game scoreless.
In the third inning, Evangel threatened again with back-to-back singles to start the frame, but Tabor's infield made crucial outs to leave both runners stranded. The Bluejays responded in the bottom of the fourth with a single from
Darcy Gillen and a walk from
Candince Moreno-Hairabedian, putting two runners on base. However, Evangel's pitching held strong, preventing Tabor from capitalizing on the opportunity.
The lone run of the game came in the sixth inning when Evangel's Kenna Mayfield led off with a single and later stole second. After advancing to third on a flyout, Mayfield managed to score on a wild pitch, giving Evangel the decisive 1-0 lead. Tabor looked for an answer in the bottom of the seventh, with Moreno-Hairabedian drawing a walk to get the tying run on base. However, Evangel's defense shut the door, recording the final outs to secure the game one victory.
GAME TWO: L, 0-9
Evangel jumped out to an early lead in the first inning, scoring three runs on four hits and taking advantage of a defensive miscue. Tabor responded in the bottom half by putting runners on base, with
Mylee Milne drawing a walk and
Reese Hefley singling, but Evangel's defense held strong to prevent the Bluejays from cutting into the deficit.
Evangel extended its lead in the second inning, scoring three more runs thanks to aggressive baserunning and timely hitting, making it 6-0. Tabor's defense worked to settle in after a rough start, with pitcher
Chloe Yturbide-Reader coming in to help limit the damage. However, Evangel continued to apply pressure, adding two more runs in the third and another in the fourth, including a solo home run by Romines.
Despite the deficit, the Bluejays continued to battle at the plate. In the fourth inning,
Cheyenne Washington reached base, and
Megan Buerger stole second, setting up a potential rally, but Evangel again found a way to escape unscathed. The game concluded with a fifth inning run rule as the Bluejays dropped the series to the Valor.
This Wednesday, Tabor will face Kansas Wesleyan University for the third consecutive KCAC matchup on their home field. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. with game two following shortly after around 5 p.m. Tabor will enter the doubleheader with a 15-12 overall record and a 6-6 record in KCAC play. The Coyotes will enter the contest with an overall record of 13-17 and a conference record of 4-8 on the season.
