LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Saturday evening offered a chance for the Lady Bluejays to get back on the right track as they traveled east to Leavenworth to take on a struggling University of Saint Mary squad after a disappointing result on Wednesday night against Bethel. The Spires have been on a skid of their own, dropping three in a row to Oklahoma Wesleyan, Bethel, and York, all on the road.
A strong 1
st quarter saw the Bluejays play exceptionally well after starting out facing a five-point deficit.
Kloe Bowin,
Hailey Contreras,
Madie McCoy, and
Miyah McGee all made key shots to help Tabor take a 13-10 lead into the 2
ndquarter.
The 2
nd quarter featured more of the same, as both squads fought back and forth. The scoreboard read 25-25 as the buzzer sounded to end the half, marking a highly defensive game for both sides.
The Spires led the entire 3
rd quarter, save for one time and took a 38-37 lead into the halftime break. The 4
th quarter was almost a mirror image of the quarter before, except it was the Bluejays' turn to finish with the lead, as they went on to win in thrilling fashion, 53-51.
Madie McCoy and
Lillie Veer both led the team in scoring with nine points each, while
Kloe Bowin finished just behind them with eight points. Veer also led the team on the glass with eight boards, and Veer and
Miyah McGee both snagged two steals.
"I thought that was the best defensive game we had played in a while", remarked Head Coach
Shawn Reed. "We guarded a lot of their actions well and we kept them off the free-throw line. Our defensive rebounding was solid but we gave up some second chance points so there was some room for improvement in that area."
The Lady Bluejays return to action on Wednesday as they head to Winfield to take on Southwestern College at 6pm.
