KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Bluejay Softball team made the quick turnaround to play another doubleheader on the road this afternoon after dropping two games at Kansas Wesleyan yesterday. This time, the Bluejays traveled east to Kansas City, Mo. to face off against Kansas Christian College.
Kansas Christian competes in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA), a governing body that includes many NCAA and NAIA institutions, as well as schools that use it as their primary home for athletics. The Falcons came into this afternoon's doubleheader after splitting a two-game series at Southwestern last Thursday, dropping the first game, 15-14 and winning the second, 12-5.
Game One: W 18-13
The Falcons started the game with two quick outs and seemed to have things going their way, but
Darcy Gillen was happy to prove otherwise with a line-drive bomb to left field to give Tabor an early 1-0 lead. The Falcons walked
Cheyenne Washington and
Jordyn Farren, and
Payten Staley took the opportunity with runners on base to hit the second homerun for the Bluejays in the top of the 1
st Inning.
Leyla Ayala was the next Bluejay to catch the homerun fever, and would also drive in
Lainee Rae Miller, who got on base after hitting a single to center field.
Tabor gave up three runs in the bottom of the 1
st, but the Bluejays drove in five more runs to lead, 11-3. Gillen hit her second homer of the game as she sent
Laura Savage and
Mikayla Guarascio in to score as well to make the score 9-3. Ayala drove in two more runs to close out the top of the 2
nd. The Falcons scored on a solo homerun in the bottom of the 2
nd and the Bluejays would answer right back with five more runs, including yet another bomb from Gillen.
The Falcons cut the Bluejays' lead to nine in the bottom of the 3rd and cut it even further to five in the bottom of the 4
th. Kansas Christian crept even closer with two more runs coming across the plate in the bottom of the 6
th, but the effort would not be enough as the Bluejays scored two more runs of their own to seal the deal and take game one, 18-13.
Game Two: W 19-1
The Lady Bluejays jumped on the board early, scoring two runs in the top of the first.
Savannah Evans drove in the first runs for Tabor with a single right down the middle, sending
Darcy Gillen and
Cheyenne Washington in to score. Neither team scored again until the top of the 3
rd, which saw Tabor score four more runs. Washington hit a deep bomb with Gillen on base to record the first two runs of the inning, while
Jacqueline Garcia and
Lainee Rae Miller would also score in the inning. The Falcons scored their only run of the second game off a line-drive single in the bottom of the 3
rd.
Gillen and Savage scored to start the next barrage of runs for the Bluejays in the top of the 4
th before Evans hit a two-run homer to make the score 10-1. If the four runs in the 4
th Inning weren't enough, the nine runs that came in the fifth for the Bluejays certainly should have been. Savage started things out with a fly ball to left, earning herself a double while sending
Lauren Roberts home. Gillen followed with a single to right field, sending Enriquez across the plate. Savage, Gillen, Washington, Garcia, Evans, Enriquez, and
Dessa Zavala all scored in the end of the Bluejays' half of the inning, and after the Falcons were unable to answer, the Bkuejays left the field with a resounding victory to sweep the afternoon, 19-1.
"It was a slugfest all day", remarked Head Coach Jeff Brewer, and he was right, with his Bluejays sending 37 runs across the plate over the course of the doubleheader.
"We had a solid offensive charge in both games and Darcy, Cheyenne, and Laura were a big part of that in both games. Chloe, Emily, Alexa, Taylor, and Shay were great for us in the circle and our defense was pretty good, they made some fantastic plays when we needed to get a stop."
The Bluejays will be back home tomorrow as they host Friends University. First pitch will take place at 1pm and the doubleheader will be broadcast live on the
KCAC Network.
