LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – Following a 1-1 draw with Bethel College on Wednesday, Tabor traveled to Leavenworth for a Saturday afternoon matchup with the University of Saint Mary Spires. Tabor entered the competition with a conference record of 3-4-1 and Saint Mary entered with a conference record of 5-3. Last season's matchup between the two teams ended in a 2-2 draw following a fiercely competitive contest.
Andre Trigo began the action for the Bluejays, firing a shot but failing to convert early in the half. Saint Mary took it down to the other end of the pitch, with four different Spires taking shots at the goal and coming up unsuccessful. After a flurry of back-and-forth action, Daniel Rodriguez made an attempt to score for the Bluejays, joined by
Abe Friesen's effort at the end of the half. Neither team was able to create any offensive output during the first 45 minutes of the match, showing a strong defensive display on both ends.
The second half proved to generate much more offensive action than the first, with Saint Mary scoring the first goal in the 53
rd minute of the match.
Pol Fernandez and
Charlie Stammers attempted to convert for the Bluejays, along with
Daniel Davis who netted the equalizer goal and set the score at 1-1 with just under 20 minutes left. Both teams continued to take shots at each goal as the time dwindled down, and Isha Hughan scored the winning goal for the Spires which led to the Bluejays' 1-2 loss.
Alejandro Honrado concluded the afternoon with six total saves between the pipes, adding to his season total of 48. As Tabor continues to develop their offensive strategies and strengthen their defensive cohesion, they will take on Bethany College this Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. on the road.
