Box Score Hillsboro, Kan. In a game that was played primarily with heavy rain, including a lightning delay, the Tabor Bluejays were unable to pull off the upset against the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes, falling 31-0.
The Coyotes got on the scoreboard on their second possession, scoring a touchdown on a 3-play, 91-yard drive to take a 7-0 lead.
Tabor was forced to punt following the Coyote touchdown, but defensive back Jarien Allen came up with an interception near the Bluejay goal line to give Tabor some life. Running back Jordan Bolden (21 rushes, 83 yards) was able to run for 31 yards on the drive, however the drive ended in a punt.
"If you're going to be an efficient offense you should have a 100-yard rusher, but it's got to lead to points," Head Coach Mike Gardner said.
Kansas Wesleyan's next drive ended in a punt, although it took about an hour of real time as officials stopped the game at the end of the first quarter due to a lightning delay.
Following a Tabor three-and-out, the Coyotes scored on a short touchdown, set up by a 70-yard run. They would add a field goal right before halftime to make it 17-0 at the break.
Tabor had a nice start to the second half as linebacker Cole Hernandez made a big defensive play to give the ball back to the offense at the Tabor 12. A fumble from the Tabor offense at the goal line allowed for the Coyotes to pounce on it for a touchdown to increase the lead to 24-0.
"I just wish we would've been able to take advantage of those (turnovers). I felt our defense played about as well as it could have given the situation," Gardner said.
Kansas Wesleyan would score their final touchdown of the game early in the fourth quarter to complete their 31-0 win.
Up next, the Bluejays will play at Saint Mary next Saturday, Nov. 4 with kickoff at 1 p.m.
"Saint Mary is very good. I've seen a lot of film on them and they are very talented," Gardner said. "It's going to be a struggle for us. We have to come out and play really well to put ourselves in position to have success. I'm anxious for the next two weeks to see how we can do."
Tabor College is a Christ-centered institution located in Hillsboro, Kansas. The Bluejays are members of the NAIA and compete in the KCAC.
