COACHING BACKGROUND
Reed's Bluejays have won four KCAC regular season championships, six KCAC tournament titles, and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament eight times. Reed's teams advanced to the "Elite Eight" in both 2015 & 2016, which are the two highest finishes in school history. The Bluejays also advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" in 2017. Reed is the winningest coach in Tabor women’s basketball history with 273 victories.
A four-time Lonnie Kruse KCAC Coach of the Year at Tabor (2015, 2016, 2019 & 2024), Reed has guided his teams to eight 20+ win seasons. During Reed's tenure, eight different players garnered KCAC First Team All-Conference recognition, and two players named KCAC "Player of the Year" (Nikki Lewis-2014 & Janelle Rust-2013).
In Reed’s 13 previous seasons at Tabor, he has coached eight different NAIA or WBCA All- America players with two of those players earning All-America honors twice (Nikki Lewis & Tena Loewen) and one player (Zoe “Shieldnight” Rust) earning that distinction three times:

Tabor Women's Basketball has also posted the highest overall team GPA in the KCAC six of the past nine years (’23-’24, ’21-22, ’20-21, '19-20, '17-18, and & '16-17).
For the fifth consecutive year, the Bluejays were also named to the WBCA 2023-24 Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll. This award recognizes collegiate women’s basketball teams across the nation that carry the highest combined GPA’s including all varsity student-athletes on their roster.
Tabor finished the 2023-24 season with the 2nd highest GPA in the NAIA at 3.826, Tabor is the only team in the KCAC to be ranked in the WBCA’s Academic Team Honor Roll Top 15 for five consecutive years.

The Tabor women’s basketball team has also been named a NAIA Scholar Team each of the past 12 seasons. For a team to be considered for the NAIA Scholar-Team award, it must have a minimum 3.0 grade-point average (on a 4.0 scale) as defined by the institution. The team grade-point average includes all varsity student-athletes certified as eligible. The Bluejays have an average GPA of 3.54 over the last 12 years.
Under Reed, Tabor has had 59 different players earn Academic All-KCAC honors and had another 47 different players earn Daktronics NAIA All-America Scholar-Athlete recognition. Tabor’s cumulative team GPA has improved more than 20% during Reed’s tenure.
Twice during Reed's tenure, the Women's Basketball team has been named KCAC Team of Character; in 2013-14, when the program won the award for all sports across the conference, and following the 2019-20 campaign.
Service is an integral part of the Bluejay basketball experience and the team has served in a variety of capacities including working at the Kansas Food Bank, organizing a carnival to raise money for playground equipment at Hillsboro Elementary School, participating in a reading program at Marion County elementary schools, running a donor bone marrow drive for the organization ‘Delete Blood Cancer’, doing crafts with the residents of Parkside Homes, sending gifts through Operation Christmas Child and serving as “Ball Girls” at Tabor football games.
Reed was named the KCAC Champions of Character Coach of the Year for all sports for the 2018-19 academic year. Under Reed's leadership, the Bluejays build character through emphasizing the Five Champions of Character Core Values, and other biblical character traits such as: Discipline, Sacrifice, Humility, Passion, and Unity. These lessons are weaved into various exercises and through regular devotions Reed leads with the team. At the beginning of the academic year, Reed leads a team building activities which help emphasize character building within the program.
Following the 2021-22 season, Reed was named one of the Most Impactful Women’s Basketball Coaches in the NAIA by Silver Waves Media. According to the release from Silver Waves Media, coaches who have been named to the Most Impactful list must have five or more years of head coaching experience and must average 14 or more wins per season during their career. During his career at Tabor, Reed’s teams have averaged over 21 wins a season (67% overall winning percentage) and posted an impressive 207-67 KCAC mark (76% KCAC winning percentage).
Reed has also actively been involved in basketball leadership at both the KCAC and NAIA levels. Since 2015, Reed has served as the KCAC national rater for women’s basketball. His responsibilities have included putting together a bi-weekly KCAC ranking of women’s basketball teams throughout the season, rating teams for both the ARC (Area Ratings Committee) and NAIA national poll and serving as the KCAC representative on ARC and NAIA conference calls related to ratings.
For the past four seasons (2023-24, 2022-23, 2021-22 and 2020-21) Reed has also served on the NAIA Women’s Basketball All-America Selection Committee.
Prior to coming to Tabor, Reed served as an assistant basketball coach at Sterling College for nine
years where he helped coach a perennial NAIA and KCAC power under the leadership of legendary NAIA Hall of Fame coach Lonnie Kruse. During a nine-year span, Reed helped guide the Warriors to an overall record of 230-55 compiling an 81% winning percentage.
During that time, Sterling College won three KCAC regular season titles, four KCAC tournament championships and made six trips to the NAIA Division II national tournament. During those six trips to the NAIA national tournament, the Lady Warriors made three trips to the “Sweet Sixteen”, two “Elite Eight” appearances and one trip to the “Fab Four”. Sterling also climbed to a #1 ranking in the NAIA Division II national poll for the first time in school history during Reed’s tenure as an assistant coach.
Prior to serving as a full-time assistant coach, Reed spent four years as a student assistant at Sterling College where the Warriors compiled a 78% winning percentage and an overall record of 89-25 over that stretch.
During his time as a student assistant, the Warriors won two KCAC regular season titles (including the first time in school history), won the NAIA District 10 Title (first time in school history) and made two trips to the NAIA Division II national tournament and an appearance in the "Sweet Sixteen"
ACADEMIC BACKGROUND
Reed earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Sterling College in Sterling, Kansas, in May of 1995. While at Sterling, Reed majored in Health and Physical Education and earned a minor in History & Government.
After earning his bachelor’s degree, Reed went on to earn a Master of Education from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. While at WSU, Reed majored in Sport Administration and served in a graduate assistant role within the Sport Administration & Physical Education departments.
FAMILY
Shawn and his wife Miranda have been married 28 years and have three children: Tristan, Makenna and Maren. Tristan is currently serving as a Graduate Assistant for the men’s basketball program at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa and Makenna is a member of the Tabor women’s basketball team.
