Hastings, Neb. Head Tennis Coach Brian Waddell and his Men and Women tennis teams traveled to Hastings, Nebraska for a long weekend of tennis on Friday and Saturday. The one thing they did not count on was rain, 40 mile-per-hour winds and 32 degrees. They did complete everything with the help of three indoor courts and beautiful but cold temperatures outside on Saturday.
First up was the Tabor men versus Baker University on Friday. Doubles got off to an excellent start winning line one and two respectfully. Tabor would go on to win three of the six singles matches, including wins from senior Stephano Moreano Chan and freshman Ko Osuga in third set tiebreaks to win the match 4-3.
Up next, the Bluejays faced off against the host, Hastings College. Tabor started slow, losing the doubles point 2-1, however they were able to rally back in the singles matches winning four of the six, all of which in straight sets, to win 4-3.
"What a very unusual day of tennis with the rain, winds, cold weather, playing inside then outside and then inside and finally outside," said Waddell after day one. "But (I am) very proud of both my teams with their efforts, patience, and team togetherness!"
When play resumed on Saturday, Tabor squared off in their lone match against Doane University. Tabor lost the doubles point 3-0, despite a thrilling #1 doubles match featuring Osuga and senior Jean Paul Fort, which Waddell described as the best doubles match of the whole weekend. Tabor was unable to win any of the singles matches, but competed well with Fort and Osuga each playing a third set tiebreaker.
"It was great playing dual matches after three weekends of tournament play," Waddell said. "There's a lot of team bonding with dual play and this was even better since both our teams played while the other got to watch and support them."
Tabor College is a Christ-centered institution located in Hillsboro, Kansas. The Bluejays are members of the NAIA and compete in the KCAC.
